I was ahead of the game today. I baked a chocolate cake and started browning hamburger for something fancy like a casserole. In the middle of the browning, R needed help in the bathroom so I went to help him. As we were washing our hands the fire alarm went off. Not the smoke alarm, but the fire alarm. The flashing light and the horrible noise. Not only did if go off in our apartment, or building, but it went of in the whole complex. Poor R FREAKED out and ran to me screaming. I was thankful he had pulled up his underpants when I positioned him as the door stop at the front door to help air things out. I called the front office but no one answered. M was asleep in her crib (or at least was quiet) and since I knew there was no fire I left her there. I ran the pan of smoking (not burning) meat out and put the pan in the snow. All the neighbors were out to greet me, and the Mexican grandparents from upstairs were laughing and either berating me or giving me advice. I said, "no fuego" and went back inside to try and figure out what to do next.
I turned on all the fans, walked around in a circle while telling R that everything was okay, then headed back outside to see if any neighbor knew what I should do next.
That's when I heard the sirens. The maintenance man poked his head around the corner of the building and asked if there was a fire. He turned the alarm off when I answered no, and went to the front office to meet the fire department. After brief visits from said authorities to make sure there was no fire, and calming R down I went to check on M.
Of COURSE she was awake. Who could sleep through that horrible alarm? She had taken it upon herself to change her poopy diaper. The basket containing the diapers and wipes were unfortunately within reach and she had used a whole container of wipes to "clean" herself. She then had selected 5 diapers to try and put on. Don't think about this mess. It was really yucky.
The worst parts of this story: I get a fine for setting off the alarm. The meat was ruined for dinner. M was really yucky.
The better parts of the story: Our fire alarm works, the pan was not burnt, and we ate chocolate cake for dinner.

I am so so sorry. I am so glad you are looking at the bright side!
I set off our smoke detectors on Saturday and thought of you. I was just trying to bake potatoes! :( Fortuanetly, my story wasn't as exciting as yours.
Ok, that story brought tears to my eyes. I'm glad you lived to tell about it!
